Former WCT surfer turned MMA fighter Dustin Barca has since stepped into the political ring, running for mayor on his native Kauai to challenge corporations who spray massive quantities of pesticides – many of which are banned in the EU – causing all manner of health and ecological problems on the Garden Isle.

While not many surf fans would have foreseen Barca’s foray in politics,  it serves as a pretty powerful example of someone actual getting up and doing something about local/global issues, rather than just lamenting on social media.

The deciding vote on Kauai takes place Nov 8th.
